I am taking the level “C” welding course here at the local college. The course is rotated between three schools so it comes to Penticton every 3 years. I have done a “wee” bit of welding in the past. A few beads with a mig welder and a arc welder. Also did some cutting with a torch. Other than that very small amount, I have zero experience. That will all change within the next 6 months as we get lots of welding hours. So this is going to be my welding blog, where I will share my welding theory as I learn it, as well as my school experience.
Before all this I was working in construction. Lots of heavy labour, concrete, and everything in between. Some framing, enough to learn it, but I enjoy framing and had wished to have done more of it. Before the economy went to crap (only a few short months ago) there was lots of construction work. In fact there was a labour shortage. That reversed fairly quickly, and now there in next to nothing in the way of work where I live. Lucky for me I am going to get my welding ticket while things are slow.
Without a ticket my wages varied a great deal. The past year I was earning $20-$25 per hour, but there was no job security whatsoever. I am hoping with my ticket that I will consistently earn at least $25 per hour to start, and have more steady hours. $25 isnt much to ask for, my brother has been earning $45+ per hour as a carpenter without a ticket, of course he does have a sh*tload of tools, and he is pretty damn good. I imagine I will have to relocate to find steady well paying work, and I am open to working up north if it means I will be making the big bucks.
