Got My C Ticket

June 25th, 2010

Well to make a long story short in the end I got my C ticket. I had to actually go to battle for it. Three of us had to spend the day pumping out welds. At the end of the day the teacher graded the welds. I passed, the other two students didn’t.

Overloaded – Stay tuned for the real story

February 11th, 2009

I have 3 books to read by friday and two finals. I am swamped. I will do a more detailed post this weekend, right now all I have time to do is study. A few people dropped out of the welding course, and the seats were
filled with new students. I am going to hang in their. I wont be dropping out. I am in for the long haul and when it is all done I will probably working up north in ft. st. johns or burns lake, or revelstoke. Who knows
when this is done I will be credited to work in any province in Canada – we are first class ever to go nationwide, before you could only work in B.C.

The Instructor Sherwood is a great guy (brownie points!)

Stay tuned for my outragous weekend update that will include:

getting my first warning!
Having our school shut down!
Maby even my test results!
The insanity of reading over 200 pages per night for homework ….

Level “C” Welding

January 29th, 2009

I am taking the level “C” welding course here at the local college. The course is rotated between three schools so it comes to Penticton every 3 years. I have done a “wee” bit of welding in the past. A few beads with a mig welder and a arc welder. Also did some cutting with a torch. Other than that very small amount, I have zero experience. That will all change within the next 6 months as we get lots of welding hours. So this is going to be my welding blog, where I will share my welding theory as I learn it, as well as my school experience.

Before all this I was working in construction. Lots of heavy labour, concrete, and everything in between. Some framing, enough to learn it, but I enjoy framing and had wished to have done more of it. Before the economy went to crap (only a few short months ago) there was lots of construction work. In fact there was a labour shortage. That reversed fairly quickly, and now there in next to nothing in the way of work where I live. Lucky for me I am going to get my welding ticket while things are slow.

Without a ticket my wages varied a great deal. The past year I was earning $20-$25 per hour, but there was no job security whatsoever. I am hoping with my ticket that I will consistently earn at least $25 per hour to start, and have more steady hours. $25 isnt much to ask for, my brother has been earning $45+ per hour as a carpenter without a ticket, of course he does have a sh*tload of tools, and he is pretty damn good. I imagine I will have to relocate to find steady well paying work, and I am open to working up north if it means I will be making the big bucks.

Starting Off With A Bang

Thought I would start this blog off with what can happen when welding goes wrong…..
